About this Event

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a guiding style of communication, that sits between following (good listening) and directing (giving information and advice).

MI is designed to empower people to change by drawing out their own meaning, importance and capacity for change.

MI is based on a respectful and curious way of being with people that facilitates the natural process of change and honors client autonomy.

(Definition from Miller and Rollnick (2013) Motivational Interviewing: Helping people to change, 3rd edition)

Dr. Prantik Saha is a practicing pediatrician with 25 years of experience and also a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. He teaches motivational interviewing for a variety of audiences at Columbia University Irving Medical Center as well as at numerous other institutions in New York through the Columbia HIV Mental Health Training Project.

The workshop will have a hands-on component and then Dr. Saha will go over some common scenarios for postdocs and suggest MI-based approaches to address them.
