Graphics Communication Workshop 2019
Tuesdays 19 February (session 1/2) and 26 February (session 2/2), 5:00-7:00pm
Scientists are increasingly asked to turn their researchinto visuals. Several publications now ask for ‘graphical abstracts’ summarizing the main results of a paper in a few figures; while animations, comics and infographics are becoming a popular format for science communication. Many tools are available to create these visuals, but in order to get the most out of them it is useful to have a basic understanding of design and visual storytelling. This 2-session workshop will include:
•Basic concepts: Participants will explore the potential of graphic design and storytelling in scientific communication, through examples and simple exercises.
•Hands-on session: Participants will storyboard a graphic abstract or a one-page graphic story about a paper of their choice.
Speaker:
Matteo Farinella is a Presidential Scholar in Society and Neuroscience at Columbia University. He combines a background in neuroscience with a lifelong passion for drawing, producing educational comics, illustrations, and animations (matteofarinella.com). Working with science journalists, educators, and cognitive neuroscientists, he is studying how visual narratives are used in science communication and education.
Requirements:
On the first day of the workshop, please bring an abstract or scientific paper of your choice as a basis for the graphic story you would like to work on

Only register if you are sure you can attend both sessions as the available spots are very limited (12 people). This is a 2-session workshop, you will need to attend both sessions. Tickets are marked for 19 February, but the same ticket will give you access to the 26 February as well.
